Sport Management is an umbrella term for the wide variety of professionals who carry out the day-to-day operations of a sport or sport-related business. Sport is a $200 billion industry in the US. All sports and recreational organizations require the expertise of well-educated leaders to handle a variety of diversified responsibilities, including supervision, financial management, public and media relations, advertising and sales promotion, facilities planning, accounting and purchasing and others.
The field includes professional leagues and teams, intercollegiate athletics, sporting goods, marketing and public relations, technology applications, recreation, amateur sports, apparel and footwear, and other areas of specialization.The sport management degree program prepares its graduates for entry level positions in sport by arming them with the specialized skills needed to succeed in this wide range of career choices.
Why Sport Management at UIndy?
Labeled the "Amateur Sports Capital of the World" the city of Indianapolis has many advantages for the sport management major. Opportunities exist in organizations such as the NCAA, professional sport teams including the Colts, Pacers, Indianapolis Indians, and Indiana Ice; a host of Olympic governing bodies such as USA Track & Field, USA Diving, and USA Gymnastics; outstanding facilities including Lucas Oil Stadium, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and Conseco Fieldhouse, in addition to recreational sport organizations, and not-for-profit sports organizations. Students in the Sport Management program had the opportunity to work closely with these organizations in class projects and internships and have helped the city host numerous sporting events including the NCAA Final Fours, Big Ten Basketball Championships, Olympic qualifying events, and professional tournaments.
